What Actually Ages Your Face (and What Doesn't)

Nobody tells you this in the beauty industry, because it does not sell anything: most of what ages a face is not on the shelf. After twenty-eight years of looking at skin, here is what actually ages it, what does not, and what I would do about it if you were sitting in my chair.

What aging skin actually is

Four things happen, slowly, to everyone. The skin makes less collagen, so it gets thinner and less springy. It makes less oil, so it gets drier and the barrier that holds water in gets weaker. Cell turnover slows, so dull, dead skin sits on top longer. And the fat and bone underneath shift, so the face loses some of its scaffolding. That is it. Every wrinkle, every sag, every dull morning is some mix of those four.

What ages a face faster

  • Sun. Not close. Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen directly and is responsible for most of the visible aging on a face. The side of your face nearest the car window is usually a few years older than the other. Daily sunscreen is the single most anti-aging thing you will ever do, and it costs almost nothing.

  • Sugar. Sugar in the blood bonds to collagen and stiffens it, a process called glycation. Stiff collagen looks like dull, sallow, lined skin. It is slow, and it is real.

  • Stress and bad sleep. Cortisol breaks down collagen and thins the skin barrier. One bad year can show on a face for a decade.

  • Dehydration, inside and out. Dry skin does not cause wrinkles, but it makes every line deeper and every pore larger, today. Water, and oils that keep water in, are the fastest improvement there is.

  • Smoking and heavy drinking. Both starve the skin of oxygen and water. You can see it in the color before you see it in the lines.

  • Over-treating. This one surprises people. Harsh acids, daily scrubs, too much retinol, a peel every month: constant irritation keeps the skin inflamed, and chronic inflammation ages skin. The industry sells aggression because aggression feels like it is working.

  • Coffee and acid. I said it on my recommends page and I will say it here: coffee dehydrates and acidifies, and the skin shows it in puffiness and dullness. I switched and my face noticed first.

What does not age you (despite the marketing)

  • Expression. Smiling does not age you. Lines where you have lived are not a disease. The industry's answer to them, freezing the face, takes the smile and the personality off a woman and leaves her looking older, not younger, within a few years.

  • Not buying the $400 cream. Price has almost nothing to do with what a cream does. What matters is whether the oils in it are fresh and whether your skin can actually use them.

  • Skipping twelve steps. Skin does not need a routine with a flow chart. It needs to be cleaned gently, fed with real oils, protected from sun, and left alone to do its work.

The goal is not to look younger. It is to look like yourself, rested, for as long as possible.

What I would actually do

1. Sunscreen, every morning, forever

Mineral, on the face, neck, chest and the backs of the hands. This is the whole game.

2. Feed the barrier

Aging skin is dry skin, and dry skin is skin that cannot hold water. Fresh plant oils, the kind that are weeks old rather than years, give the barrier what it is made of. That is what The Lift is: a day cream, an overnight balm and a mask built around oils that are pressed and blended close to when you use them.

3. Exfoliate gently, not often

Once or twice a week, with something that lifts dead skin without scraping. Not daily, not harsh. You want turnover, not injury.

4. Firmness from the inside

Collagen is made inside the body. Protein, vitamin C, sleep, and, for me, a daily collagen I actually trust. The jars feed the skin from the outside; this builds it from the inside. What I take is here.

5. Calm down

Breath, walks, less screen at night, a slow facial once a month. Lower cortisol is visible on a face within weeks. The spa's Breathing Room and the slow, warm-handed facials exist for exactly this reason.

6. Leave your face alone

Fewer products, used consistently, beat a cabinet full of actives used in a panic. Pick a simple routine, keep it for three months, and judge it then.

Your face is not a problem to be fixed. It is a record of a life, and it can be a beautiful one at every age if you stop fighting it and start feeding it.
